I cancelled a flight on expedia and was refunded in airline credit. I had purchased insurance on the ticket and didn't realize I had to

File a claim to be refunded. I'm **** out of luck because I already ordered my other tickets and American Airlines is charging a $200 fee on the airline credit, so even if I eventually use the credit in the next 12 months, I'm still out $200.

You need to check the full policy of the insurance you purchase, it's possible it covers you fir change fees, which is what I'm guessing AA want yo charge you? I'm not convinced that charge fees should apply against a credit, so you may need to be more forceful with them to fully understand why they are applying thise $200 fee.

It's actually pretty typical that they take the change/cancellation fee out of your credit. You can certainly try to call the airline and negotiate to get that credit back, but I don't think you'll be successful.

Yes, that's what happens when you cancel non-refundable tickets. You will have to pay a re-booking fee.

Most likely your travel insurance would not have helped in this situation, unless you purchased a "Cancel for any reason" policy.

Just be glad they refunded you anything. Remember theses are classified as non-refundable tickets. If you need a definition of what the words mean, please consult your dictionary.
