Is Newark, NJ a bad place?

I will be visiting Newark, NJ in June for a concert/convention, and i'm curious as to if the city is as bad of a place as I hear.
My hotel is at the airport right outside the Ironbound area, and i'll ONLY be in the downtown area at the Prudential Center. I won't even be leaving the Prudential Center grounds except for when I use Uber and cabs to get back to the hotel. SO i'm just wondering if there's anything I would have to look out for.

If big cities scare you, prepare to be scared.

Some parts are bad and many are NOT bad

ALL PLACES are bad places anymore, directly from how charging 5000 times the actual cost of a thing, where that makes for EVERYONE to be impoverished, thus driving criminal behavior.
Simple logical deduction from what all we see every where any more.

Based on your description, you should be fine.

What are you so afraid of? If everyone who went to Newark got killed, there d be no one left. Most crime occurs among gangs and drug dealers. It rarely impacts tourist and convention goers.

Yes and no. Newark is definitely not the safest place, but around Prudential center there's an increased amount of police officers due to tourists, events, and the penn station. That being said it doesn't mean you won't see homeless people (there are many), and even in that area there are robberies and shootings. Just be cautious of your surroundings and how you act. For example, if you are walking alone on the streets at 3am it might not be the smartest or safest choice. I don't think you will have any problems based on your described activities. You don't have to be scared of Newark, plenty of people go on about their daily lives there (work/school/events/resturants), and they are fine. Have a good time!

My cousin lives there and never has problems.

You will be in safe enough areas, assuming you stick to the times and places mentioned. I worked in Newark for a year, walkig near the Prudential Center twice a day. Fairly heavy police presence. Airport very safe

Yes

It's a good place not to be.
