Why do Asians wear masks?

Especially at airports at arrival flights from Asian countries like China in particular. Not all wear masks but quite a lot do especially the women. Why is this?

Most Asian countries have people living VERY close together (yes, in China, too - most of the population lives within 300 km of the ocean). The people who do this do it because they are ill and are considerate enough to try not to make other people ill.

They don't want to catch a communicable disease while out and about in public. They also are kind enough to wear masks while sick to try and prevent others from getting sick.

It's a courtesy thing and an attempt not to share your germs with others (people usually only do that when they are sick or suspect they are coming down with something). It's the equivalent of western culture covering our mouths when we cough except that it is considered more effective when done all the time.

Because they are very shy and stuff like that!

One of the reasons is due to air pollution

Afraid of germs.

Whilst it is likely that the wearing of masks is related to a desire to not catch germs, in reality it is more likely due to the very poor air in China and other Asian countries where the use of fossil fuels in industry has left many cities with poor air quality and permanent smog conditions.

This is very common among Japanese and Chinese people. They are trying not to breathe in polluted air, and also trying not to pass on any of their own germs to other people.

Because we know how dirty you Americans are

Many drive ride motorcycles. You can & many do get black lung from years of ridding them do to exaust carbon in the air. & other things. In vehicles they often have air filters in the A.C. Unit also to filter air in the vehicles. In offices & homes with A.C. The air is filtered. You would be surprised living in Asia how fast & often A.C. Filters need cleaned even living out side of town. They say living in Asia. On average takes 5 years of your life do to air pollution compared to America. Big citys 10 years.
