Should I fly to Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, or JFK?

I'm flying to New York City in about a month. We're currently planning everything and it's going great. But we have one thing yet to decide, which airport should we fly to? We're flying with United and we've heard that Newark Liberty is great airport for customers of United, but we've also been to LaGuardia last year, and they were also great. We've never been to JFK, so anybody got any ideas?

. If you're ending up in New York, then the only difference is the transportation to your home from the airport. If not, then it depends what airport your connecting flight leaves from. You do NOT want to have to transfer airports, no matter how nice the people are.

Newark is outside nyc (and NYS), being in New Jersey. Hotels there a bit less expensive, but does require travel into the city. Given the choice I would say 1) Newark, 2) JFK, 3) LaG, having flown into and out of all three

United does not serve JFK directly, though its Star Alliance partners do. You may have a listed United Airlines flight to JFK but an alliance partner actually operates a flight. With its fortress hub at Newark just a few miles away United withdrew from JFK many years ago instead of competing with American, Delta and jetBlue head-to- head.

LaGuardia is the closest airport to Manhattan but it's in a middle of extensive reconstruction project. While part of a new terminal is already open, the old terminal is still in use, and some local politicians described the old terminal as "Third World facility." The reconstruction also involves extensive roadwork so getting in and out of the airport by car or taxi could be difficult.

Mass transit to and from the airport is by the Transit Authority buses that connect to the Subway. The M60 bus runs to Manhattan from the airport, and connects to several subway lines, but keep in mind that the nearest station along the route, Astoria Boulevard, is currently closed until the end of the year for renovations.

Of the two airports Newark is by far is the most modern, BUT it is not in New York so getting into the city from there can be somewhat convoluted. To get to the city by Uber or Lyft you will have to go through the usually congested Holland or Lincoln Tunnel and pay a toll, plus tolls for the roads to get to either of the tunnels. If you use mass transit you will have to take Airtrain Newark to a nearby rail station and then take Amtrak or NJ Transit train to the Penn Station.

If you are flying United, Newark is the logical choice.

If you are arriving at a time when traffic is bad, then go to JFK or Newark so that you can get where you want by rail. If you go to LaGuardia, then you have to go by roads, because there's no rail at LaGuardia.

If you are going at a time when traffic is light, then see how much it will cost for each airport. If there's a big difference in price, then go to the cheapest airport and use the money you save to pay for your ground transportation.

Whichever itinerary gets me to the metro NY area at the time I want for the price I want

I've flown in or out of all of them when visiting NYC. To me, there's not really a big enough difference in transportation to the city to make that a determining factor in flight selection. I would choose the flight that gives you the best price and/or flight times.

Doesn't really matter. They are all about the same.
