I'm flying from Rome, IT to Atlanta but my flight technically continues to Miami but I'm getting off in Atlanta?

I'm wondering if I'm able to have a checked bag if I'm not continuing on to Miami? Would my checked bag automatically go on to Miami or would I be able to get my bag when I land in Atlanta? I'm flying Delta Airlines.

By flight you mean Itinerary as I can just about guarantee you won't be getting on the same plane to Miami in Atlanta.

As for just getting off in Atlanta, in general you would NOT be able to do this as your Checked Bags will be sent through to your final destination. However, because Atlanta is your first Port of Entry into the US you will go through Customs and Immigration at which times you must take your Checked bags through.

After you are through Customs you generally re-check your bags in for the final leg. In your case you would just not do this. If you do this don't expect any sort of credit or refund for the unused portion. If you are a member of any Frequent Flyer or point program you may lose credit for the unused portion as well since you actually didn't take the flight.

Normally, you could not do that with a checked bag. However, you will go through Immigration and Customs when you arrive in Atlanta, since that is your point of entry into the US. You have to retrieve your bag before you go through Customs; normally, you would then drop it back off to be rechecked onto your next flight. But you would be able to just take it with you and leave the airport as if Atlanta was your scheduled final destination.

Your checked bag would go the full journey - so to Miami

You are arriving on an international flight, you will at some point have to collect your bags to go through customs. After customs, there's a drop off area where you will take your bags if you have a connecting flight.

No problem.

You wouldn't be able to do it on a domestic flight, but you will go through passport control and customs in Atlanta. You will have to retrieve your bag and clear customs. After customs there's a luggage check in for the connecting passengers. You can simply by pass that step and walk out.

If you do this, your reservation will automatically be cancelled. Don't get into habit of doing this, the airlines now monitor for passengers using the "hidden city" trick.

You will go through immigration and customs in Atlanta then recheck your bags to Miami

If your ticket is to Atlanta, that is where you bag will be checked to.
Since it is an international flight and the first US stop is Atlanta, all bags are taken off the plane and sent to customs for pick up.
If you bought a ticket to Miami with the intention of getting off in Atlanta because it was cheaper, as long as you don't give the bag back to Delta after customs, it won't go to Miami. Keep in mind that the airlines don't like when people do this. If you have a round trip ticket and are going back to Italy, the rest of your trip will be cancelled. Delta might red flag you for future flights.

If you book the ticket to Atlanta, you can check the bag to Atlanta

When you check you bag in at Rome it will have a tag on it that is Marked for Atlanta and it will be off loaded at Atlanta for your pick up.
