What do I legally need to do when flying into Rome at Fiumicino Airport?

I've never left the United States before and am planning on going to Rome in August. Is there a place within the airport for Italian Customs and Border Patrol? I know it's the only international airport in Rome.

Yes, of course. When you get off the plane, just follow everyone else. There will be a sign to Immigration. You'll stand in line and show your passport. They may ask where you're staying and whether your visit is business or pleasure. Then you go to the carousel and claim your baggage. You walk it through customs- there will be a line for Nothing to Declare. Just walk through.

What Gypsy and dogtags said - we just got back from Rome a couple of months ago.

And to clarify, there are TWO international airports that serve Rome but neither is technically IN Rome. Ciampino is actually closer to the city center
