Baggage and connecting flights on the same airline - Air Canada?

I have a connecting flight, both the same airline - Air Canada, from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada and then to Rome. Will Air Canada transport my luggage directly to Rome or will I have to collect and re-check my luggage in Canada for the connecting flight? If I'm paying for a 2nd checked luggage will I have to pay the fee twice? I emailed the airline but I'm asking here while I wait for a response.

If you are with the same airline, your bags will be transferred automatically to the next flight. Ask about it when you get to check-in at the airport if you are worried but there shouldn't be any problems. As the airline knows the bags are going to Rome, they have already calculated and charged you for excess baggage all the way.

Your check through baggage will be checked all the way through to your final destination… Rome in your case. You only pay the fee once, when you first check in and hand over your baggage in Trinidad.

Because your baggage goes all the way to Rome, it's a good idea to have a change of underwear/socks, your travel kit with shaving material, and whatever pills and valuables (e.g., camera) you might take in your carry-on bag. In that case, if that second leg from Canada to Rome does not take off on time and you're forced to lay over in Canada for, say a day, you'll have those things in your carry on bag even though your check through baggage might have gone already to Rome.

Remember, your check through baggage doesn't always travel with you on the same plane you'll be on. That in fact happened to me and my wife. We got waylaid in SFO while our luggage went on the Rome. We flew into Rome the next day and our luggage was there waiting for us.

When you arrive in Canada you can expect to have a Customs an Immigration check before you can go to the departure area for your Rome Flight.

Canada Customs can desire to inspect your luggage.

After the the check there's an area inside the Customs hall to return your luggage to the Airline and you then make your way to your flight.
Your departure gate for Rome may or may not be in the secure area set aside for International Transit passengers.

It is probable that the departure area for your flight is an area of the Airport outside of the transfer zone.

You can check the procedure for your flights on the Toronto Airport website.

ALL passengers entering the Airport get a Canada Customs and Immigration check.
