What were retro logo flight bags for?

I'm talking about the logo flight bags such as the Pan Am and American Airlines bags. I've come across a definition on Wikipedia saying they were for flight related manuals, documents and equipment for the pilots. However, I've also seen photos of both passengers using logoed bags from the flight they are on are carry-on luggage and all flight attendants having one as standard issue. This is in older images of early commercial jet travel.

Where would these bags have been obtained for the public who used them? Did you get one sent to your address after booking so it would be ready for the flight?

And would flight attendants have used them for their own carry-on luggage or just for airline specific equipment?

The logoed bags you're thinking of were sold or given away by the airlines, principally for advertising purposes.

Doubtless when you look up "flight bags" you'll be seeing those often used by pilots to carry their equipment, manuals etc. They're not usually logoed, they're just something the pilot has bought to carry his kit.

You're over-analyzing this. Back in the day flying was a rare activity for rich people who flaunted their richness. The airlines were happy to oblige by selling merchandise with their logo on it.

Many were gifted by airlines as promotional gifts.
