New York Greyhound station to JFK airport?

I'm traveling to New York via Greyhound bus and need to get to JFK airport from the bus station. I never been to New York. What would be the best way to get to terminal 1?

Simplest would be cab

I'm sure there's a bus to JFK from Port Authority where all the buses are.

Greyhound and most other buses arrive in New York at the Port Authority Terminal. There's no separate Greyhound station.

The "Airporter" bus costs about $18 and operates every 30 minutes, directly between JFK and the Port Authority bus terminal.

If you want to take the train, which is cheaper, you have to walk from Port Authority to Penn Station, take the Long Island RailRoad to Jamaica Station in Queens, and take the Airtrain from there to JFK.

Grayhound operates from the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. To get to the JFK you have three options.

1 Airporter bus from the Port Authority to the JFK Airport. The buses run every 30 minutes or so. How long the trip takes depends entirely on traffic. Part of the trip will be on Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) which is always packed.

2. The Port Authority Bus Terminal is right on top of the 42 Street subway station. Take the E train to Queens. Get off at Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue Station and transfer to the AirTrain JFK. The subway fare is $2.75, the AirTrain fare is $5, plus $1 for a new Metrocard. This is probably the fastest and the cheapest way, but you have to transfer between trains.

3 At the same subway station take the A train to Brooklyn and Far Rockaway to the Howard Beach Station. Transfer to AirTrain to the terminal. The fare is the same as the second option, but the trip is longer.

The main New York City bus terminal is the Port Authority bus terminal in midtown Manhattan. Go to the subway station in the basement and board either a northbound E train (towards Queens) or a southbound A train (towards downtown and Brooklyn). The E is normally the better option but this varies depending on construction, breakdowns, etc., so check first. If taking the E train, get off at Jamaica. If taking the A train, get off at Howard Beach. At either Jamaica Station or Howard Beach, get on the "AirTrain" (which is actually an elevated railroad but looks like a monorail) and get off at Terminal 1.

One warning
The NYC subway system is designed to transport people and not people with luggage.
If you have anything more than a small carry-on it would be much better for all involved if you took the bus
