"honk Kong airport"? Better check your Jeppesen approach and airport chart again.
"Due to the proximity of the hilly terrain of Lantau Island to the South and East of APT, significant low-level wind shear and moderate to severe turbulence can be expected along the approaches to and departures from both RWYs when winds blow off these hills, i.e. From East through Southwest at about 15 KT or more."
"Surface winds at the APT are generally not good indicators of the wind that may be experienced during the final phase of the approach. Winds at approximately 2000 ft may be a better representation of the prevailing wind conditions in the region.
Generally, mean wind speed should decrease towards lower altitudes but isolated strong gusts may be expected. Wind direction would also change with altitude due to blocking of the general wind flow by nearby hills or in the presence of low-level temperature inversion which occurs mostly in the cool season… "
Sounds pretty exciting for any sized aircraft.
Other restrictions are overflight rights of mainland China vs. Hong Kong authority, noise abatement efforts.

It's not dangerous, but is subject to turbulence and wind shear, easily handled by competent pilots. You should have tried Kai Tak, now that WAS interesting what with dodging the skyscrapers etc…

  • How dangerous is breathing in bad smells? I was at security at an airport and it smelled pretty bad and was wondering if that can affect or damage the body in any permanent way.
  • How long can you stay at an airport for after you Land? So I'm heading to Los Angeles (LAX) and I land at 11Am but I can't check into my Airbnb until 3pm. I can just sit at the airport for like a hour or two just to kill some time before I need to check in? Or is that a security threat?
  • Why didn't more planes crash at Hong Kong Kai Tak airport? It looked like a very dangerous airport with pilots having to fly close to mountains and high-rise buildings and making a sharp almost right angle turn to line with the runway manually. Why were there so few accidents and crashes? Why didn't more planes crash into the skyscrapers like on 9/11?
  • How do i figure out if a large plane can land at a certain airport? I'm making a game and it involves airplanes among other vehicles being stationed in cities, now each city may have an airport, but I need to know if there's any way to figure out if a plane as large as a 747 or an antanov an-225 can land at one, is there an airport class size? Runway length? How does that work? I need to figure this out for about 600+ cities airports so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
