What airport does the registered mail coming from Italy to Houston, Texas arrives to?
It arrives to one of NYC's airports and from there it is redirected to various states of the US? I'm just asking to understand what will be the path of the mail. Thanks, folks.
Added (1). Thank you very much Rona Lachat, for your answer! It's been very useful. The international mail office of Italy is probably located near to Malpensa Milan Airport (it is only that one for the whole country according to what I've read).
The mail goes FROM the International Mail office of Italy. Most likely the Rome Airport.
It goes by commercial plane to one of the Airports in USA with an International mail Office. Most likely to JFK.
It can go to one of the others depending what flights have some room for mail.
IT DOES NOT just go anywhere.
International agreements over 100 years old designate where each country exchanges mail.
There are currently nine IMF International Mail Facility locations across the US, with one location in Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands respectively and two locations in California.
Mail shares the space with the luggage on the planes. One reason it can take a while to cross the ocean. Each plane has a limit to how much mail it will take.
It might go to Miami it is just that JFK has more daily flights from Rome.
Italian Post Office is just responsible to get it to the USA CUSTOMS facility. After US Customs does their inspection it is then up to USPS to get it the rest of the way.
The path can change at any time. Computers monitor and direct each bag of mail onto the next available routing. For example when the Airport is closed for a storm like the recent hurricane not much point directing mail there for a few days.
The worlds post offices have been doing this for a very long time and do communicate with each other regularly as to where the mail will go. Sometimes it is just held at the faraway place until the receiving place has The ability to deal with it.
The next storm could be a blizzard that closes NY JFK. Obviously that day the mail would just go to Miami.
- Should I be scared coming home at 12:00 am? I'm catching Lyft from the airport and I'll be coming home alone at 12:00 am maybe 12:45 am should I be afraid?
- Is there any way to expedite the security screening at MXP airport in Milan, Italy? I'm planning a trip to Italy next year, flying in and out of Malpensa (MXP). Is there any process that I can sign-up for, as a US citizen, that will expedited my entry into the airport for when I'm leaving the country? Something equivalent to our TSA PreCheck. I know I have Global Entry for when I land in the US, but I'm trying to get through the Milan airport faster and not have to wait in long lines if at all possible.
- Do air traffic controllers notify other airports when a flight arrives? For example, suppose that a Delta flight from Atlanta arrives without incident at Detroit. Would Detroit's ATC have to notify Atlanta's ATC of this? Or would this be a matter for the airline's operations department?
- Which terminal is united Express in Houston? I'm flying to Mexico but for some reason I don't see anywhere which terminal united Express with mesa airlines is supposed to go to?
