Packing for a flight tips?

What are some tips, things I should know before packing my bag and heading to the airport? I've never flown before.

Don't take as much as you think you need to take. I can pack all I need for ten days in a carry-on size suitcase and my personal item. I might not be able to do that if I was travelling to someplace where it was the dead of winter, but in any other weather it works fine.

If you are checking luggage, then your carry-on should include everything you would need for 24 to 48 hours after arrival if your checked luggage doesn't arrive when you do. Change of socks and underwear, toiletries, prescription meds, phone and charger, for instance. That gives the airline time to find your luggage or for you to buy replacements if they don't find it.

Check the TSA rules about what can't go in your carry-on. They really mean it. Items they don't allow will not be allowed through security. You can mail it to yourself or throw it away but it won't go onto the plane with you.

Check your airline's website and the terms of your ticket to make sure your luggage is within their allowances.

Arrive early. Two hours before departure for domestic flights, three for international unless you're flying from a very small airport.

Be aware of the liquids/gels rule for items in your carry-on bag. If you want to take any liquid/gel items (which include bottled water and other drinks, shampoo, conditioner, liquid foundation, lip gloss, lotion, etc), then those items must be in containers that are 3.4oz/100ml or smaller in size, and you can only take as many as you can fit into a single 1qt Ziplog baggie. That baggie has to be taken out of your carry-on at security. They are strict about this. You can take larger items, and as many as you want, in your checked bag.

It's also wise to check the TSA website (www.tsa.gov) for anything else that might be questionable. Anything that looks like a weapon is not allowed in your carry-on, even if it's just a toy (e.g., water guns, toy knives, etc). You CAN take things like scissors, nail clippers, nail files, tweezers, etc., but there are some restrictions on some of those items.

Be sure to pack any medication or valuables in your carry-on bag and not your checked bag. Your checked bag could end up delayed, and you'd be missing those items. It's also not unheard of for things to go missing from checked bags.
