Do airlines credit miles to a frequent flyer account after paying or after flying?

Flying

After flying. That's why they're called flier miles because you earn then when you fly. However, if you used the airline's credit card, you may earn miles for the purchase as well which would show up a few days after the billing cycle and then normal miles when you fly

You get some when you pay your credit card bill, based on the price. You get the rest when you actually fly, each leg at a time.

After flying

My experience is that miles are credited once you've flown. It is for certain not when you paid.

Flying

After flying because sometimes people's plans change and they can't make their flight.
