What additional qualification should an airline pilot have?
Aside from the licence and school/university education are there any other qualifications or courses that would set you apart from other candidates when applying for a job with an airline?
A military career.
A type certificate and flight experience for the type of aircraft that the airline operates would be a good thing to have.
In addition to a bachelors (or higher) degree and an ATPL, which requires 1500 hours of flight experience, they should have much more than the minimum 1500 required hours. Their experience hours should also be valuable. Rather than just flying a C-172 for thousands of hours during the day, they should:
Have night experience
Have cross country experience
Have multi-engine experience
Have experience flying many different types of planes
etc.
Many pilots who fly for major airlines also have jet experience. That's why many major airline pilots come from regional airlines or from military pilot careers.
Real world flying EXPERIENCE as a working pilot. That's what matters most, followed by a type rating or ratings in the aircraft they operate.
Pass eye exam--corrected vision, color distinction.
Physical--good health, height (sometimes)
Mental--enough about that one
References--got to be recommended by someone.
- Do I have the right to change flights when the airline have changed the time? I booked flights for the summer and my return flight has changed time, and is now earlier. There's a stop over, which would now be a very long wait due to the first flight being earlier. Will I be allowed to change the second flight to a earlier one, so I don't have to wait so long? Also who do I change this with if I do, the company I bought the tickets from or the airline itself?
- Where should I study to be a pilot? I'm finishing up my HSC this year and want to be a pilot. I can only pay for what the government will subsidise (150,000) via Help. Also once I become a pilot, how do I manage to get all the hours to begin working for larger airlines? Is it also difficult to enter into a cadetship? I just wanted to add that I'd prefer to study in Australia.
- Can I become an airline pilot for a major airline if I go to college for a computer science degree (Bachelors Degree)? And also why is their so much debt in order to be a airline pilot? Is it because of people choosing the "go to college for aviation" sort of route?
- Is becoming a regional airline pilot one of the few great jobs that you can have without a college degree? Many regional airlines don't require college degrees. Is becoming an E-170 or CRJ700 captain much better than working as a bus driver or a carpenter? You think sleeping at Motel 6s or Motel 8s and drinking that free coffee is bad? It would be a very nice treat for bus drivers or people with other jobs that they could find with no degree. I would be honored to sleep at Motel 6 or Motel 8 for free. At least it is much better than hostel or Airbnb.
