I'm taking my first flight ever and it's with Alaska airlines. I don't have a suitcase, so I'm bringing a large duffel bag. Is this okay?

I would rather not be charged extra! The bag is a little longer than a normal suitcase but a lot thinner

Somewhere on Alaska Airline's website (probably under baggage) they have the allowable dimensions of a 'standard' bag that won't get you hit with excess baggage charges. A normal duffel bag should be within their limits.

No one can tell you for sure. It sounds like you're talking about a carry-on bag and not a checked bag, so it will be up to the discretion of the gate agents. Sometimes they look away when it's only slightly larger than what is allowed, and other times they are very strict, measure the bags, and enforce the limits. I have found that my carry-on bags are more likely to be checked/measured when the flight is especially full. Part of the issue is that the bag has to fit into the overhead compartment; if you don't stuff your bag completely full, and it still has a bit of give to it, then you're more likely to be able to take it on board.
