How do I pack carry on only when flying from summer to winter?

I will be flying from Salt Lake City to Melbourne Australia in July. I will make a connecting flight in LA. It is about 90-100 in Salt Lake City and I suspect quite hot in LA also. I understand in Melbourne it will be around 40-50. I'll be traveling around Australia and New Zealand. I usually wear my heavy clothes on the plane but in hot weather? Is the LA airport air conditioned.

I made a similar trip this past July (flew to Melbourne through LA). The LA airport is air conditioned and fairly comfortable, temperature-wise. I live in Pittsburgh and found Melbourne in July to be fine. I took a sweat jacket and long overcoat to wear over it and was okay most of the time. It did get chilly at night, but nothing too extreme. The coldest day was when we took an expedition to the Grampians, a nearby mountain range. It was beautiful but cold. I pulled out the hat and gloves that day. But when we saw the Great Ocean Road I was fine with just my jacket.

In short, winter in Melbourne is pretty mild. It's like winter in Florida, for the most part. A bit chilly in the city but not really bitterly cold. I wore light clothes while traveling and kept my jacket in an outer pocket of my suitcase so I could pull it out quickly when we landed.

Mail the clothes you won't be needing to yourself. Then just pack what you will need.

Pack for your destination and dress in layers for travel.

Why are you restricting yourself to only what you can put in a carry on bag? International flights to Australia usually include a free checked bag.

How difficult is it for you to unzip your jacket and carry it on your arm?
Roll up the sleeves of your heavy sweater or whatever it is you have to keep you warm in frigid air of Australia.
What did you plan to do with this stuff during your flight time? The overhead bins are full of carry on bags.
YES wearing the bulky winter gear saves room in your baggage.

I find it hard to believe you are going that far with just a carry on bag.

Yes the people of California have discovered the thing called Air conditioning. Very common in large buildings. They even have it in Australia.
