Direction to straight toll highway from new york city (jfk airport) to buffalo airport?

I'm traveling from jfk to niagara falls but i want to take the straight route that has tolls and stopovers/rest areas. My navigation is not showing me that option. Previously i did travel all the way from niagara falls to new york city and i remember i did not take any exit all the way till new jersey. Can any one help me with the direction. As in which route and highway to take. I also remember that i had to force my self against the navigation to hit that highway.

You want to get on I-87, the New York State Thruway, which goes from New York City to Buffalo. It has regular rest areas and the like, plus there are tolls.

There are different ways to get from JFK to the Thruway, but I'd probably consider I-678 to I-278, which will lead you to the Triboro Bridge and onto I-87.

Take the Van Wyck expressway (I-678) north. Stay in the left or center lane, when the road divides bear left onto Grand Central Parkway towards the RFK (Triboboro) Bridge. Follow the signs toward I-87 North. Stay on I-87 which forms part of the New York Thruway. When you get to Albany, you have to take I-90 west toward Buffalo. The I-87/I-90 interchange is built in such a way that if you are northbound on 87 and want to stay on 87 to go to Montreal, you have to exit. If you want to go to Buffalo you stay on the road. This is a somewhat longer way.

A short cut is to take exit 16 off I-87 and follow Rt-17/I-86 to I-390 and pick up the Thruway just south of Rochester. Along the major highways you can always find gas stations and places to eat/rest at practically every exit.

Well, Google Maps offers two choices, neither of which involves the NY State Thruway via Albany. I have driven this region many, many times, and while Mike's comment is true, more or less, a better way to leave the NYC region is to use the I-80 or I-280 going west through New Jersey. Once inside PA, you switch to the I-380 to Scranton, where you pick up the I-81.

From there, you stay with the 81 North to at least Binghampton, NY. From there you have a couple of choices. One is to stay with the 81 to Syracuse and join the westbound NYS Thruway from there, which is I-90 up there. The other is to take I-86 west from Binghampton which will bring you to the I-390 which heads towards the western area near Rochester. You can either take that to the Thruway, or you can use Rt 36, 20A west, and 400 to come into the Buffalo region. Then, join the I-90 where it is the ring road on the east side of Buffalo, and that will bring you to the airport.

I-87 the whole way. If your app is not showing this, it is possible that Settings in the app, you declined to be shown any toll roads. I-87 is what you want - unless YOU told the GPS to avoid it! I just drove most of your route today, in reverse - Ulster County to Lake George and back. One main road - I-87.

The toll road that you want is the New York State Thruway. Take the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) north. It turns into the New York State Thruway at the border between New York City and Westchester County. It gets to Buffalo about 8 hours later.

When I-87 splits off from the Thruway, you want to stay on the Thruway, not 87 (which goes towards Montreal).

Make sure not to miss the exit for the Buffalo Airport; it might be before the exit for downtown.
