Luggage rarely gets completely lost. It more often gets delayed. You can receive some compensation from the airline to replace needed items while you wait. If your luggage is completely lost, the airline will also compensate you for that, to an extent. The details will be in the fine print of your ticket terms. If you are really worried, you can purchase additional insurance on your items. But you should keep all valuables, medication, and money in your carry-on bag so that those are not things that go missing or get delayed.

You file a claim with your travel insurance company

First, you go buy a toothbrush (unless it was in your carry on bag).

First, you notify the airline. In many cases, it will show up.
