Are pen knives legal in california?

Is it legal to carry them around as a self defense weapon?

Also what if I need to take it with me when I travel? It's metal so it can't get passed the metal detectors at the airport, but it looks like a pen until you open it up so will they assume it's a normal pen and let me keep it with me?

If you're packing souvenir knives or blades of any sort, they must go in your checked bags. The only exception is spoons, forks, and plastic or round-bladed butter knives, which are allowed in your carry-on bags. Scissors are allowed in your carry-on bags if the blades measure less than 4 inches from the pivot point. Otherwise, they must go in your checked bags. Regardless of the type of bladed object going into your checked bags, it should be sheathed or securely wrapped so the blades are not exposed.

Legalities in California explained here:

As you're in the USA, goodness knows why you think a small knife will be great defense against someone with a gun!

You have selected a best answer, but I will answer anyways.

Save for a few types of knives, all knives should be placed in checked baggage. (See link.)

Under no circumstances try to sneak this aboard via carry-on. (I've already had to deal with passengers that try to smuggle items like this aboard.)
