Most large airports serve a wide geographical area. My whole state only has two airports for the major commercial carriers. There are sometimes smaller, regional airports that may have a few commuter planes. But if you want to travel any kind of distance, you have to get to the nearest major airport. You have relatively easy access to the NY airports- trains, buses, driving.

HPN, White Plains Airport, also known as Westchester County Airport, is closer depending upon where in Stamford area, but as a smaller airport, has fewer direct connections and the fare could be substantially higher. Also, once you get to Westchester county airport New York, you still need to get to Stamford. It is a more convenient pickup point if someone is coming to get you by car.
If in public transportation, a flight to JFK, trains into Manhattan, and the Metro North Railroad take you into Stamford, and the travel time is longer, but is frequent. Also, if a flight is cancelled, it is easier to reroute into the New York City airports.
I have flown into White Plains, and if someone is getting you by car, it is far more convenient for them.
It's all in cost, conveniences, travel time, and certainty of arriving the same day.
Into HPN,
JetBlue Airways from Florida airports
Delta Air Lines from (ATL) Atlanta, GA and (DTW) Detroit, MI
United Airlines and American Airlines from (ORD) Chicago, IL
American Airlines from (DCA) Washington, DC and (CLT) Charlotte, NC
and some code sharing and smaller airlines with specialty flights
You can connect through these cities into White Plains.
La Guardia, JFK, and Newark have many more non-stop flights.
LaGuardia to Stamford is 32 miles (51.5km) and HPN to Stamford is 14.5mi (23.3km) and if there's no traffic, 45 minutes driving vs 30 minutes.
Trains from Grand Central Station in Manhattan to Stamford leave every few minutes for a 45 to 70 minute train.

The Hartford and the New Haven airports are much further away then the ones in NYC.
The New Haven air port is a commuter air port. Not my favorite to fly in or out of. I'm not sure about how far away Igor (Sikorsky Memorial) is either. I know it is in Bridgeport.

There are no airports in Stamford, and they typically use LaGuardia in NY as the nearest major airport connection.

There are airports; but it sounds like you are looking for commercial flights. They are not the same.

Yes

Stamford is just outside of New York. New Haven is 2+ hours away.
