Have you ever had problems checking a piece of luggage that was slightly over 62 inches?

I need a new checked bag, but the piece I'm looking at is 28 inches in length… Which means the total outside dimensions are 63 inches (L+W+H). The airlines say that the bag is oversized if it's over 62 inches (L+W+H). That's an extra $200 for 1 extra inch.
I know they're really strict about weight, but I've never seen them take out a tape measure on anyone's checked luggage to measure the dimensions. It looks smaller than some bags I've seen people checking.
Have you ever had someone measure your bags to make sure it was under 62 inches?

"Slightly over"? Hmm… That's like saying "slightly pregnant". Hmm.

I haven't personally, but I have seen people have to pay a couple of times. Usually the agent doesn't call people on size of checked luggage when it's close.

I have watched both Lufthansa and American agents measuring checked bags AND charging oversize fees. Besides, if you fill a 62" suitcase it will generally be overweight! They'll catch that fast. Our checked bags measure 56" and we have to be careful to meet weight.

What is the part about "62" that you have problems grasping?

Airline profit on an economy seat is often under 4%. The industry makes their profit on fees.
If they suspect a bag is oversized, they measure it including wheels and handle. If they are nice, they give you 1/2 inch.
They do not have to. If you do not pay the overage price, they will not take the suitcase and that is painful.
Buy a different suitcase if that manufacturer was stupid and trying to get rid of the suitcases on a mistake.
Caught one time, and it usually costs more than the suitcase price.
You need the actual external dimensions.

If your airline has a size limit, that is the limit. Yes, they will measure. Most care only about weight and gladly accept golf bags and skis and such without overcharging. I wonder if you are correctly reading the policies of that airline.

In reality 1 inch is neither here nor there. And I don't believe anyone that says they physically measure checked bags? They may if it's clear larger that the regs, but no one can tell a bag is 1" bigger! Question is as a large bag, you do need to be careful about over filling it, I personally use smaller checked bags as they are easier to handle and control the weight, as my partner packs the bags and she can easily fill a bag, so smaller means less weight.

It's irrelevant whether anyone here has or hasn't seen a bag being measured. The point is, they MIGHT measure it.
You might be lucky, you might not.
