We're an hour s drive from the airport. How early do I have to leave home?

Generally you should plan to arrive at an airport two hours before the flight leaves. Also, add on time for parking and getting into the terminal building. Also, if there's likely to be heavy traffic on the road, add even more time.

Bottom line: I would leave your home by 8:30am. If all goes well, you should be at the airport by 9:30, giving you the two hours to get through the security inspection and the other processes.

8:45 assuming you are confident you won't hit traffic making it longer and that you're being dropped off. If you have to deal with parking give yourself a little more time.

You have to be at the check in area 2 hours before departure.
As you are a bew traveller it is wise to be a little earlier as newbies take a few extra minutes finding their way around,
So you know you live one hour driving time from your front door to the time you will be at check in or is that the time to arrive at the parking lot entrance. Guaranteed no traffic delays?
Leave home by 9:00 and you have time to get a meal before you board your flight. NO NEED to aim for being last on board as they are closing the door.
Summer travel Airport busy with many new flyers.

You should be in the airport by 9:40am. It may take you an hour to drive to Charlotte, but you also have to consider the time to park and get from your car to inside the airport (which can be considerable at a larger airport like CLT). Traffic in Charlotte can also be quite heavy in the morning. I myself would leave around 8, but no later than 8:15. If you are being dropped off, and parking won't be an issue, then you can maybe push that to 8:30. Definitely no later than that.

I'd probably leave around 8 and stop somewhere close to the airport for Breakfast.

7:30 to 8 am considering you'll be going in rush hour traffic.
