Buying flights separately instead of together is cheaper. Why?

I'm on the American Airlines website looking at flights. I'm looking to fly to from Nashville to Brazil this July (Jul 18 - Aug 4). If I buy a flight to Miami ($200ish), and then buy a separate flight to Manaus from Miami ($500ish) I get a total of $700 dollars. But if I fly staright from Nashville to Brazil with a stop in Miami, its $1300 dollars. Why is this?

JUST THE WAY IT IS.

Airlines can set any fare they want. They do not have to set a per mile price.
they desire to fill ALL their planes as much as possible.
VERY few desire to fly from Nashville to Brazil.

Part of this extra price is that if for some reason when you reach Miami and you miss your connecting flight the airline needs to look after you. Do you think that FREE hotel room was Free to the Airline?

The search sites look for the FASTEST connections not every possible one that exists if you are willing to wait a few hours.

Avianca Brazil, LATAM Brasil have flights from Miami have you checked for their prices?

You DO NOT have to take a direct flight. Check prices out of Houston, DFW as well.United Airlines JetBlue to FLL and Azul Airlines.

You DO NOT have to use the same Airlines or routes for both directions.

For your bargain fare have you added in any fees there might be for luggage, seat selection a meal YOU pay for while waiting for connections

Atlanta is another place to change planes or even Boston.

Keep searching there are many ways to get from A to B.

For near your price of $1300 you could stop off in Canada on your adventure.

In the UK it is often cheaper to buy rail tickets in short stages even if you are doing a long journey.

All that you can say is that "it is the way the system works".

Have you never bought a bigger packet in a supermarket because it is cheaper per ounce than a smaller packet?

Be careful purchasing separate segments… If one is late and you miss a flight purchased separately, the flight is cancelled and you are "stuck".

Sometimes it's the other way around. Airlines have very sophisticated revenue maximizing systems.

Booking as one trip has some significant advantages. If you book two trips and your first flight is delayed, causing you to miss your flight to Manaus, you've got a real problem.

It is just the way the airline(s) price it. Just keep in mind if you buy 2 separate tickets, you will need to leave the secured area to retrieve your luggage and then recheck them in. You will also need to pay for the luggage every time you do this. So you would need to do this 4 times as opposed to 2. Also keep in mind, if your first trip is delayed or cancelled for whatever reason, the airline has no obligation to help for the second ticketed trip.
