Have you ever had luggage damaged coming off flight? How? At old Athens airport, saw my bag come towards down narrow baggage track-both handles?

Oh I love it. My wife and I flew into Athens back in 1978.

They had no gateways back then, so we had to walk down the exit ladder and across the Sun heated tarmac to the international terminal. As we walked through the doorway into the air-conditioned terminal we noted a very large kiosk at the wall across from us. It read:

"Lost Baggage Claim" in English.

The largest kiosk in the building was the lost baggage claim. I said to my wife, nodding towards the kiosk, "Uh oh, that doesn't portent well."

Sure enough, our luggage went to Rome instead of Athens. The good news is that they found it in Rome and sent it back to us the very next day.

I know this doesn't answer your question directly but I had to share our Athens connection.

But I do have a direct answer. Yes I watched my luggage thrown into a pile on the floor by baggage handlers at the Catania, Sicily, airport. Literally they lifted the baggage off the tractor that had come from the airplane and tossed it along with others into a pile. We had to walk among the bags to pick out our own. One of mine had a busted zipper that had been ripped open by the impact of the toss. ANS.

It happens everywhere, However the function of luggage, besides to hold your stuff, is to adsorb the damage that would occur to stuff in the regular handling. Do not expect your luggage to never get damaged.

Yes, but what do you want us to do? Claim against the airline for you?
