Can I travel internationally to home country without passport?
I'm a green card holder living in the United States. My mom is a naturalized US citizen with a passport, I do not have a US passport because I'm not a US citizen. She became a citizen after I turned 18. We want to travel to our home country in Vietnam in September 2018 for one month.
Can I travel with her to Vietnam with just my green card and Vietnam visa? We did it before 5 years ago, but I'm unsure we can do it now. One airline accepted green card and visa only but another airline wanted passport too.
I called Asiana Airlines recently and asked about my situation. The lady said I might be able to get to Vietnam with just green card and vietnam visa but I might have a problem getting back into the states. She told me to go to the US Embassy in Ho Chi Minh city and talk to the consulate and they might be able to help me out.
Will they seriously let my mom go back to the states but not her daughter? Has anyone ever been in my situation before? Does anyone have a serious answer to this problem? Thanks in advance.
I heard that US airport security only checks the plane ticket where your first stop is and not the entire itinerary. So if my itinerary has 2 stops before heading to Vietnam. Like flight from LAX to San Francisco to Vietnam, I would only have to show my driver's license and not even my vietnam visa. Is that true?
Gg.
I would suggest your contact, the State Department or Dept of Naturalization.
IT can happen. With multiple different outcomes.
Only a citizen has right of entry to home country.
Getting on plane is separate issue from getting into country.
No.
Don't be calling the airlines. You need to talking to the Vietnam government and the US State Dept.
You need a passport to get into the US by plane. It's just that simple and is spelled out on CBP's website.
You are right, TSA doesn't care if you have a passport or not. They only care that you have an ID that matches the ticket. The airline on the other hand WILL check to make sure that you have the proper documents before you get on the plane. They don't want to be stuck with having to return you if you aren't admitted into the country.
While you might be able to get into Vietnam, you probably won't be allowed on the plane back to the US. If they do let you on, CBP might not let your in. At the very least, it would be very difficult. You might not even get on the plane to Vietnam without a passport unless you have whatever documents Vietnam requires of citizens to enter the country.
Nope.
You need a passport to travel internationally - so you need to apply for your Vietnamese passport.
"Can I travel internationally to home country without passport?"
Probably not. Get a passport because you will not be allowed to return to the USA without one. It can take up to 8 weeks after application to receive it unless you pay a lot of money extra to put a rush on it.
Call the nearest Vietnamese consulate and get the details.
The Green Card you carry in your wallet will not do. You will have to get a document called "Re-entry Permit" that will work as a Passport until you get your citizenship. Apply for it well in advance, the process of obtaining one can take several weeks.
Also, this brings up another question. Why haven't you applied for the US Citizenship yet? Having a US Passport will surely avoid problems like this in the future.
I doubt if you can travel internationally without a passport
