What documents do I need to travel in Mexico?

Okay so here is my situation. I'm a US citizen (born in the US), however I have the option to become a dual citizen because my mom is from Mexico. I'm going to be flying on a US plane from Texas to Mexico City, then I'll be flying on a Mexican airline from Mexico City to Cancun. Do I need a visa? Or any other special documents besides a US passport? Would it be a lot easier if I get my Mexican citizenship?

Unless you stay longer than 90 days, I believe you do not even need a visa. I took a bus from Tijuana to Ensenada and they just looked at my passport at a checkpoint about 40 miles from the border.

Put 'mexico' in the 'learn about your destination' box.

I don't see how having Mexican citizenship would make any difference in the actual travelling part, the crossing the border part, except that Mexico can't refuse you entry if you're a citizen. Millions of US citizens who are not dual citizens travel to Mexico every year with no problem.

Passport.

  • I just volunteered to give my seat up for a travel voucher. Do I even need to show up to original flight? I can drive home in rental? I volunteered my seat upon check in for my flight with united from Chicago to Cincinnati. I could easily drive there and make it back to Cincinnati faster than my original flight in my rental. Do I need to be present at the airport for my original flight to redeem the travel voucher?
  • I want to take cash to Mexico what's the safest way? I'm going to Mexico around June and I'm gonna take a couple thousand dollars with me, I'm not going to put the money in the atm or cards because I want to exchange the money in the Mexico airport there I get the pesos, I will probably take two wallets in my pocket and dress to blend in and not attract attention, I've traveled alone once but traveled to Mexico by plane around 20 times I know how everything works, but what's the safest to take the cash
