Booking plane tickets for multiple people?

So me and 2 of my best friends are going on a trip in December, and I was wondering if we should all buy our tickets separately or if we should give one person our money and they buy it for all of us. We plan on taking Alaska airline and I don't know if we can still get the same seats if we all buy our tickets separately

You have a point, if you buy them altogether then you might be able to sit together

The person who pays for the tickets should get the money from the other two passengers before buying the tickets. All three passengers should also join Alaska's frequent flier program unless they already belong to the American Airlines program. Then provide the frequent flier numbers when booking the tickets.

What a friend and I do is sit together with our laptops and book our tickets at the same time. We can look at the seats available and choose seats together.

IF one person buys then you know that all three have a ticket.
It appears you are not frequent flyers. Let one of you claim the miles for points. Takes a few flights to get anything.
December is busy planes can fill early.
While nice to sit together you are not very far apart. If the plane is not full after take off usually not too hard to swap seats with others. The cheap seat is the one in the middle. The window seat or aisle is a few dollars more. IF you want CHEAP do not expect cart wheels of joy from those that paid a premium price for their seat choice. Some will switch some do not. A complimentary beverage may lubricate the situation.
Using the human at reservations can assist in getting the seating arrangement you all prefer.
YOU have to decide how important CHEAP is vs. Sitting together.

Buy separately while possible to sit together it is harder to do. Side by side seats can have a different price.

If one buys ensure they are paid in advance at time of booking, NO ONE should have to be out the fare.

Need things like hotel rooms or a rental car at destination may want to get the help of a travel agent to make a package deal for you.

Even if you buy the three air tickets together in one deal, you're never sure to sit together.

The main advantage of buying the tickets in one deal is to be sure that the three people will travel with the same flight on the same day. However, as for a today reservation of a flight in December, the risk is very low, if not zero, if you buy the tickets separately the same day and more or less at the same time.

The main advantage of buying tickets separately is that a change is easier when a change (change of time or day, cancelation) happens to be necessary for one member of the group.

More tips

To be honest it is generally better to book together, if someone is in the frequent flyer program, they would benefit from the extra miles and be know to the airline. If you are first timers to Alaskan, then it makes little difference who books. The airline may allocate seats to bookings, so your more likely to be seated together, but there's never a guarantee of this, and checking in online as soon as it opens, is the best way of securing seats together.

Ideally one person will book, BUT that person should be SURE to collect the money from EVERYONE first. Too often we see questions on here from people who've made hotel or airline bookings for a group without getting the money first, then being stiffed when some of the group change their mind and decide not to go after all.

It is better to book together.

  • Flying with multiple airlines? I'm flying with United and switching to frontier for the second flight. My question is, if I check my bag I know I'll have to go out of security, to baggage claim, recheck my bag, and to through security again. So can I gate check my bag to avoid all of that? Does it cost anything to gate check? It's a carry on but I also have my purse, and supposedly I can only bring one of those on the actual frontier flight
  • What is the best site to buy plane tickets online? I want to book a flight for a one off trip, I googled my city to my destination and I saw listings from around $175 (spirit airlines) up to $500 (United and other airlines). What are the reasons for such a price gap in airline tickets? Is this accurate? What should I be expecting to pay from Chicago to Texas and what site do you recommend?
  • Best airline to travel with if taking multiple suitcases? I'm traveling within the United States. I'm planning to leave for two months. So it's a lot of clothes and necessities. I'm looking for an airline company that includes luggage. Most airlines allow a carry on and additional charges for luggage. Any suggestions?
  • WHAT IS THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF GOING ON HOLIDAY FROM BOOKING TO THE TICKETS TO LANDING IN THE COUNTRY AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN? So I have just turned 18 and there are many important things that we're not taught and there's no other way us young people can learn these things. So someone please state the entire process. All I know is that somehow you buy tickets and then there's a whole process in the airport. (Please can you talk about visas, hotels, how long you can stay etc)
