Shanghai 23 hrs layover, do I need visa with American passport? Are lines too crazy long?
I'm looking for cheap tickets to Japan and one option is a 23 hrs Layover in Shanghai on June 8 with Asia Eastern Airlines. I'm traveling with my husband and my 1 y/o baby. As far as I read I don't need visa for a layover less than 24 hrs, but other page said I do need visa 🤨 also, have you being in Shanghai airport? Are lines to get in and out the airport too long? We have American passport btw.
Transit visa is not required provided they are travelling directly to a third country/region via either Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG), Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, or Shanghai Railway Station. Passengers may exit the transit area but must remain within the Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province. Maximum stay of 144 hours.
This website has information on Shanghai's airport
So you know you have exactly 23 hours between flights.
What do you expect to do while waiting?
Leave the terminal? Then you will have an Immigration/Passport check and a customs check. The wait can be fast or slow depending what flights landed a few minutes before yours. Budget 2 hours to depart the Airport
Now Budget one hour travel time to some hotel and one hour back.
You should be ready to check in about 3 hours before your next departure.
So far that is about 7 hours of your stop.
You have time for sleep. For budget purposes 8-10 hours at Hotel.
Now you have about 6 hours to explore the city. Not much time.
Chinese officials at the Airport will decide if you can enter China. Your passport is you IDENTIFICATION it is not an entry ticket to any country other than the US.
As far as I read SO WHERE WAS THIS?
but other page said… WHAT PAGE
The Official at the Airport you deal with will decide NOT A WEBSITE PAGE you read.
You can ASK for a temporary one day pass to exit the Airport. MOST can get one.
You can wander inside the transit zone of the terminal for 23 hours.
How you share sleeping and looking after your stuff between the Adults is something you deal with.
Just wait on lines, you do not need visa
You need a visa to leave the airport. If you stay in the airport no visa needed.
