Do I need a visa to connect in Shenzen, China?

I'm traveling to Thailand in October from Chicago. On the way back to Chicago I'm flying from Bangkok to Chicago with a 4 hour stop to connect in Shenzen, China. All the information online seems to be all over the place on whether I need a visa to connect for my flight in Shenzen. Some say yes, some say no, some say a VOA and some say this particular airport has rules different from other airports in China.

No… Especially if you just stay in the airport… You would only need a visa if you plan to leave the airport and do stuff in Shenzhen, but with only four hours, there isn't enough time.

All the information online seems to be all over the place.
Suggest you just check the one place that government of China uses to post Information.

Visa Exemptions

A foreign citizen can enter China without a visa under any one of the following circumstances:

1. Direct Transit

A foreign citizen who is transiting through China by air is exempted from a visa if he/she will stay only in the airport for no more than 24 hours and has a valid connecting ticket with confirmed seating on an international flight.

You do not have much time. Get something to eat, maybe a few souvenirs or snacks for the flight and use the toilet. The ones in the Airport are much more comfortable than the Airplane one.

No nothing to worry about, I went to Bangkok via Beijing on the way there and Chengdu on the return. As long as you are moving on within 24 hours then it is ok. Everyone will go through immigration as most airlines get you to check in again. I had 12 hours in Beijing and got to have a brief look around the city, they just give a temporary stamp in your passport and your good to go.
