In advance. The day you buy is irrelevant, it is the period before your intended travel date, that gets you a better deal the earlier you book. Midweek flights have less demand, but still require advance booking.
I have heard Tuesday or Wednesday because airlines will adjust their pricing based on what their competitors are charging. However I suggest you be flexible with your dates of travel and start your search early. Tickets tend to go up the longer you wait.
