If you are checking in for an international flight, yes. If not, why would it matter?

The check-in kiosk do perform a lookup of your passport against a database; if your passport is flagged or if there are any irregularities then self-service check-in won't work and you'd have to see an agent anyways.

If you do happen to get by the self-service check-in, then you still have to deal with the Customs and Immigration agents either at your departing airport or when you arrive, and if your passport isn't legit that'll probably be the end of your trip.
