Why does airport security not let you bring drinks on a plane?

They thought it was full of nitroglycerine.

People could try to hide flammable liquids in drink containers. There are many ways to try to hide such an act. It takes a bunch of time to properly search for and evaluate drink containers. Drinks are readily available on planes and in the areas after one passes through security. Therefore banning drinks makes it quicker and easier to process people, and there's no real huge downside. It really boils down to security, risks and benefits.

They serve practically any drink you could want on flights.

Airport security does not prevent you from taking drinks onto a plane.
They do however want to orevent you from taking dangerous liquids which can be disguised as a drink or shampoo. Do to the lack of manpower and tine it would take to check every container with a liquid analyzer, they just ban larger containers altogether. 100ml wouldnt nake a huge bomb so that was the number they settled on.

You can bring them on the plane. You can't bring them through security. There are rules about the size and number of liquid/gel items you take through security because of the attempted use of liquid explosives in the past.

Talk to the TSA.
