Ah - I have been gone too long and relied on faulty memory! My previous answer was all wrong - apologies!

Well, Winthrop couldn't be much closer to Logan airport. She could easily take an uber to the airport. I've personally no experience with Winthrop per say, but the general area it's located isn't the greatest in my humble opinion. It's an "older" part of Boston and considering it's so close to Logan is less desirable although it may be going through a gentrification process? Planes would be going directly over your home when they use the north/south runways. The area along R1A (look at a map) is mostly a fuel distribution facility, lots of truck traffic. Let's just call the general area "industrial". However, as I said, I've personally never driven into Winthrop, so it could be wonderful, albeit probably expensive considering it's right on the water.

Assuming she's young and wants to enjoy the city, and Boston is a great city for young adults, I'd suggest she consider someplace like the North End. Just as close to Logan but in a much "funner" location. The North End is where the Old North Church & Paul Reveres house is located. Logan Airport is just on the other side of the tunnel from the North End, 10 minutes via car and there's public transportation options that probably don't exist coming from Winthrop. The North End is full of great restaurants and a great place to go out at night. There are T stops that would allow her to get to virtually any place in eastern MA easily. She wouldn't want or need a car if she lived in the North End, or anyplace else in Boston proper.

I'd just suggest that I lived in southern NH seacoast area for many years and there were many airline pilots who called that area home. Living in NH is significantly cheaper than living in Boston or even MA. There's a bus service called C&J that provides service from Dover, NH, Portsmouth, NH and Newburyport, MA directly to Logan. I used C&J personally and I often saw airline employees (pilots in uniform) on the buses. You can park your car for free at the C&J terminal. The bus will drop you off right at your terminal, couldn't be easier. The drive from the NH boarder to Logan airport is about 40ish miles and takes less than an hour unless you hit traffic. Distances/drive times in New England aren't as long as you might think from looking at a map.
