Multiple aircraft crossing the same runway at an airport?

I was wondering if 2 or more aircraft are allowed or have crossed the same active runway at the same time? A runway is 3km long so an aircraft down each end could do this safely.

Is this permitted? Does this happen anywhere in the world? Are there any examples?

Yes, it IS possible that two or more airplanes CAN be allowed to taxi across a runway at the same time as long as no flying aircraft are on approach TO that runway.

It happens often. Even with aircraft on approach (though not cleared to land). Takeoffs are held.

Sure, happens all the time. At JFK Airport, for example, the tower controller will stage the aircraft arriving on runway 4R/22L at taxiways J, H and G, just short of runway 4L/22R, and will wait for a gap in departures, like when a regional jet is waiting for in-trail separation from a just departed heavy, or will hold departures for a minute. Then he or she will direct all the aircraft holding short of 4L/22R to cross at the same time and hand them off to the ground controller.

  • Booking plane tickets for multiple people? So me and 2 of my best friends are going on a trip in December, and I was wondering if we should all buy our tickets separately or if we should give one person our money and they buy it for all of us. We plan on taking Alaska airline and I don't know if we can still get the same seats if we all buy our tickets separately
  • Is it safe for two planes to take off at the same time at the same airport? I was wondering because I was flying out of Guangzhou airport in China and I saw another plane on another runway take off almost at the same time we did (he was headed away from us though)
  • Flying with multiple airlines? I'm flying with United and switching to frontier for the second flight. My question is, if I check my bag I know I'll have to go out of security, to baggage claim, recheck my bag, and to through security again. So can I gate check my bag to avoid all of that? Does it cost anything to gate check? It's a carry on but I also have my purse, and supposedly I can only bring one of those on the actual frontier flight
  • Best airline to travel with if taking multiple suitcases? I'm traveling within the United States. I'm planning to leave for two months. So it's a lot of clothes and necessities. I'm looking for an airline company that includes luggage. Most airlines allow a carry on and additional charges for luggage. Any suggestions?
