Do commercial airlines always delay or cancel flights when a thunderstorm is over the airport or are flights able to proceed if the storm?

Is not severe?

If there's a thunderstorm over the airport, or very close to it, the airport will typically cause all flights to be delayed. Cancellations because of storms are rare.
Thunderstorms are usually short lived, so the airport can resume operations within a fairly short time.

It is not something to worry about.

Not always. It really depends on the storm and the airport.
If its a big storm, flights can be delayed and even cancelled but usually just delayed. Planes can take off and land during storms at most airports if the runways have ILS. If the storm is capable of throwing out tornados, the airport will usually have a ground stop.
Its not worth worrying about.
Airlines lose lots of money on delays and cancellations so they only do it when absolutely necessary and of course the safety of their passengers and multi million dollar aircraft are the highest priority.

A thunderstorm right at or very near the airport will almost certainly cause a delay. Some light rain might not.

Even storms that along certain flight paths, far away from the airport, can lead to takeoff delays because of rerouting that ha to occur.
