Can you be an airline pilot if you have asthma?
But I don't have asthma.
That depends upon the severity, what sets it off for you, and how successful you are at preventing attacks.
But as a commericial pilot you are going to be facing jet exhaust fumes, dry cabin air, hot aprons and most vitally you MUST be able to evacuate yourself and your crew and passengers in any emergency. If those situations are going to set off your asthma then sadly you'll have to look for another career.
Recruitment is fiercely competitive and airlines can afford to be very choosy indeed and pick the safest and best applicants who pose the least risk.
You can still fly, but it will most likely have to be privately.
- Asthma suffers do you have any problems taking your inhalers through Airport security? I'm off to Canada tomorrow from Heathrow and I have packed two inhalers in my hand luggage, they are in a clear re-sealable bag, I don't have the original box or prescription. Should this cause any issues? Has anyone else had any issues getting inhalers through Airport security?
- What additional qualification should an airline pilot have? Aside from the licence and school/university education are there any other qualifications or courses that would set you apart from other candidates when applying for a job with an airline?
- Can I become an airline pilot for a major airline if I go to college for a computer science degree (Bachelors Degree)? And also why is their so much debt in order to be a airline pilot? Is it because of people choosing the "go to college for aviation" sort of route?
- Is becoming a regional airline pilot one of the few great jobs that you can have without a college degree? Many regional airlines don't require college degrees. Is becoming an E-170 or CRJ700 captain much better than working as a bus driver or a carpenter? You think sleeping at Motel 6s or Motel 8s and drinking that free coffee is bad? It would be a very nice treat for bus drivers or people with other jobs that they could find with no degree. I would be honored to sleep at Motel 6 or Motel 8 for free. At least it is much better than hostel or Airbnb.
