Can my friend enter the international part of the airport on my layover so I can visit him?

I have a 5 hour layover in fort lauderdale coming from out of the country and I want to visit my friend who lives there at the airport bar. Should I exit through customs or can he come in if he doesn't have a ticket anywhere?

Without a ticket, he can't get through TSA security checkpoints. YOu'd do better, if you can, to exit and meet him at a bar outside the security area. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to get BACK through TSA check and to your gate on time.

No, he can't enter through the security check. You would have to go through immigration to the unsecure area of the airport, and then go back through immigration and security to get back to your gate.
I was just in the Fort Lauderdale airport- maybe the international area is better, but I was surprised at how outdated it was, and how few food service choices there were.

What is your citizenship status? Do you need a visa to be in the US? Are you transferring from an international to a domestic flight? In that case, you'll go through immigration and customs anyway. There are a lot of variables you haven't told us.

No

Nope

He <<can't>> pass the security screening unless he has a ticket or a gate pass. He is not eligible for a gate pass since he is not accompanying someone old or a minor to any gate.

If you are coming from a country that does not need a visa to enter the US, then you could go through immigration and customs to meet him somewhere outside of the secure area.

If he really wanted to, he could buy a <<fully refundable>> ticket for some flight that leaves many hours after you would arrive. You meet up, then he cancels the ticket and gets the refund.

He can't get into the secure area without a ticket

Of course not. Only those travelling can go airside.

You're out of luck. You can't exit and he can't go airside.

No
He would not be allowed through security

  • How does an international layover at ATL airport work? This is my first time having a layover on my way back from an international vacation. We're flying Aruba to ATL with a 1 hour 14 minute layover then ATL to MSP. How does this process work? We go through customs but will we have to recheck bags or go through security again?

  • Where to pick up luggage at Haneda Airport for International to International transfer Hi, I'm a Philippine passport holder (not eligible for japan pass), i'm just wondering do i have to get pass the immigration just to get my luggage? Because I will be staying in haneda airport for a 16 hour layover (overnight). Thus, I have to pick up my bag because the airport will not keep it overnight. And re check it in the morning.
