They scan the numbers.
They scan the passport. The airline has an obligation to ensure that your passport is valid and that are legally able to travel to your destination. Otherwise, they can be obligated to return you at their cost if you are denied entry because of an invalid passport or other documents.
They scan it when you get to the airport. Then, as you board the plane, they check again just to make sure you didn't hand your boarding pass to somebody else.
The Airport / Airline has automatic Scanning machines.to check in and often to get through gates.
After that, once you have a Boarding Pass - the Pass has a bar code, and that does the work.
As you get to plane.
they often double check the passport AND the ticket are still matching (you have not been substituted for someone else)

- My passport photo is so ugly but I just got it? My passport that I renewed just came in the mail, and the photo is so ugly. I waited four weeks for it and am going on vacation next week. I'm so mad at myself. My face looks so big and it's just plain ugly. I'm embarrassed when I go to the airport. People might laugh when they see my photo. It's really really ugly. What do I do?
- I've been applying to flight attendant positions and was wondering how much notice do airlines give you before you must attend training? How much time do you have to say goodbye to family, friends, etc before you go away to the training program? I applied to Delta, United, and American, so if there are varying time frames per airline, please let me know.
- Buy a plane ticket way in advance or right before leaving, which is cheaper? I can take a vacation any time, so I'm just looking for the lowest price I can find. In general, is it better to buy a ticket 3-6 months before or a week before you go to get the lowest prices. My thinking is that if you wait until the last minute, an airline with empty seats on a plane will dramatically reduce it's ticket prices to fill those last few seats. Does this ever happen?
