Cost of altering name on Virgin Australia ticket?

I've just purchased a Virgin Australia ticket through checkmyflight.com. As soon as I hit "PAY" I realised I'd used Jacqui instead of Jacqueline as my first name. I contacted them straight away and they replied 12hours later to say I would need to pay $340 to alter the name (literally adding 5 letters!). I was under the impression most airlines had a 24 hour grace period for minor changes like this. Is it worth taking the risk and leaving it as is? I've spoken to a couple of seasoned travellers who said that it would probably go unnoticed but I'm not really keen on airport hassles on the day.

It will make no difference whatsoever. Everyone knows it is a shortened version of your name.

If the name on the passport is different from booked in name you will not be allowed to fly. It is not true it will go unnoticed and there are NO periods of grace

I agree that any charge beyond say $10 for minor things like this is daylight robbery. However, there's no grace period and all of the airlines do it. There may or may not be a problem at the airport, hopefully not, but you will only find out when you get there.

It depends…

Airlines (at least in the US) have the choice to allow you to either reserve a flight without actually booking it for 24 hours, or a 24-Hour cancellation policy. This does come in handy as I have done it several times. The best you would be able to do in this case is to actually cancel the ticket, and then rebook the ticket at what ever the current fare is.

However, you did not specify what country you are in, and the fact that you are booking with a 3rd Party site with an airline based in Australia this 24 hour rule may not apply. You would have to look at the particular laws that are in force for your transaction.

Some airlines allow you to change 1 or 2 letters without a fee, but you are changing several. So in answer to the question as to the cost to change the name, the answer is very likely $340 just as they said. Just be glad that they are doing it at all. As with may types of tickets, especially ones bought through 3rd parties, there's absolutely no name change at any price.

This is also another example of why you should ALWAYS deal with the Arline directly when booking.

  • First and Middle name joined on plane ticket online? I'm a first time flyer. Someone purchased a plane ticket from Delta online, he gave me the confirmation code to log in as a guest and I did with my first and last name. I checked on the flight details that my first and middle name are joined together. Will that be a issue when I get to the airport to show my ID?
  • Why are American Low Cost airlines very good compared to European Low cost airlines? Hi. Ryanair and Easy jet suck in Europe. I was so impressed by JetBlue and South West in the US. They were just like legacy major airlines
  • How much should a decent round trip airline ticket cost? A round trip airline ticket from Columbus, Ohio to Orlando, Florida, flying coach or economy? I don't fly enough to know a genuinely good price from a "too good to be true" or too expensive. Trying to decide whether it's worth it to just drive.
  • SEQUENCE OF NAME ON AIRLINE TICKET My name is John Geo Smith. My passport Surname Smith My passport Given Name is John Geo My AIRLINE TICKET name is John Geo Smith Is this correct? Why do some people say last name is suppose to be first then first then middle? Such as Smith John Geo. @Aster Rhoids, just confirmed with airlines… You're wrong.
