Process of checking in with airline agent and what they do with passports? - 1

Standard procedure to get your ticket and gate pass. DHS will examine passports for authenticity and proper use.

If a total novice: get there 3 hours before your plane departs, stand in the check-in line (the longest one will be for those without perks who did not check in online) with your bags and passport, when it is your turn: greet the agent, tell them where your flight is going and when it is departing, and hand them your passport. Do what they tell you.

How many times do you plan on asking this?
I already explained this to you in one of your many other questions on the subject.

If you passport is cancelled, don't fly. It's that simple. Find an embassy or consulate of your country and get a new one before you go.

You stand in front of the agent, hand over your passport and he or she scans it to make sure you are on the passenger list. I don't know if the airlines check that your passport is still valid, but if they don't then security will.

They usually just check it to make sure everything is correct and you are who you say you are. Make sure everything on your passport matches with all the correct information or a lot of places won't take it and won't let you through!

You continue to ask about what airlines do with Passports or items related to the validity of a Passport.

If you suspect your Passport is not valid or won't be accepted you need to talk to the Airline at a minimum, but better yet the Passport Agency in your Country. If you are outside of your country then your countries Embassy where ever you are. Because even if the airline allows you on, when you arrive at your destination that Countries Immigration WILL do a thorough check of your Passport and status.

If they deny you entry you will not be admitted in that Country and be required to pay for your flight back. If it is more serious and there's outright fraud or criminal activity associated with your Passport you will be detained and possibly charged criminally.

There's a more important question you're not asking: What will happen when you show up in another country with an expired passport? Since we don't know where you're headed, we won't be able to answer that. But it will not be pleasant.
