How safe is flying on a major airline in the USA and are we do for a major plane crash since it has been 10 years since one in the USA?
I feel like it is any time now. When I was a kid major plane crashes were once or twice a year. When I was 12 and my Mom's cousin died in one it was Valuejet in May and TWA 800 in July which was the one he and his son died on. I have been creeped out to fly ever since.
If you flip a coin today you have the same chances at getting heads as you do tomorrow. It doesn't matter how long it's been since you got heads. Statistically flying is much safer than any other form of transportation. Every time you get in a car you are placing yourself at much greater risk of fatality.
It's not like earthquakes where they're 'due' every so often. Plane crashes are less because airline and plane safety, and pilot training, have all improved.
We're way overdue for a crash and the big earthquake
So you are now in your Mid-30's and still "creeped out". I would highly suggest you find a good psychologist who can help you through your fears and perhaps provide you some ways to deal with your issues.
As for flight safety, if you go by the statistics it is safer to fly than it is to drive where you have a much greater risk of dying in a car accident than you do in a plane crash.
Although before you do fly please post the flight information here, as your family doesn't have the best track record and I would probably want to make sure I'm not on your flight.
Plane crashes are not random events that are subject to the laws of probability. The deregulation that allowed Boeing to put a plane on the market before it had been adequately tested resulted in greater risk- until they were grounded. Meanwhile, 30,000 people a year die in the US because of car accidents. You should probably worry more about that.
- Will Ryanair refund tickets when my son (although not flying) has been taken into hospital seriously ill? I was due to fly with Ryanair this week but my son has been taken into hospital so I can't go away (and other kids are all seriously ill at home with chronic diarrhoea. Plus I have had the same until today. Will Ryanair refund the costs? Or do I leave my partner to look after the kids and fly despite all the illnesses?
- Never been on a plane but parents want me to fly solo to Washington to visit grandparents? My grandparents' 50th anniversary is coming up. Neither of my parents could get time off to visit, so they want to send me on a plane, by myself, from NY to Washington (state). The issue is that I've never once been on a plane, or even set foot in an airport, for that matter. I've voiced concerns about this with my parents but they don't care and say I'm going whether I like it or not. I'm 14 please help!
- Plane ticket has first, middle and last name but my passport only has first and last name? I'm flying Scandinavian Airlines and my plane ticket has my first, middle, and last name but my passport only has my first and last name. Does anyone have any experience with this or think it will be an issue? I called the travel agency and they told me they could not do anything to correct the middle name. I was also thinking about bringing another form of ID like a birth certificate or social security card to be safe.
- Can I become an airline pilot for a major airline if I go to college for a computer science degree (Bachelors Degree)? And also why is their so much debt in order to be a airline pilot? Is it because of people choosing the "go to college for aviation" sort of route?
